SWCA seeks a Paleontological Resources Lead/Principal Investigator to provide leadership for SWCA&s;s Rockies Region projects with a Paleontological component. This position reports to a Director in one of our Rockies subregions (New Mexico/Four Corners, Great Basin/Northwest, or Rocky Mountain Plains). Location will be a factor of employee preference and SWCA office location. Most likely, locations will be based out of Albuquerque, Denver, or Salt Lake City; however, Durango, Fort Collins, Sheridan, and Vernal offices are also possible. Distributed employment is supported. The Principal Investigator will work closely with Directors, other team leads, and Rockies regional leadership. The position is a regular (with benefits), full-time, salaried position.


Under this requisition, we can hire three different positions:



  • Lead Paleontologist (Lead I) - Sub-regional focus, experience with medium to highly complex projects
  • Senior Paleontologist (Lead II) - Regional focus, experience with highly complex projects
  • Principal Paleontologist (Lead III) - Regional to national focus, very high project complexity

Below please find the job responsibilities for a Lead Paleontologist. Responsibilities for a Senior or Principal Paleontologist will include providing technical leadership for larger, more complex projects; and working on a broader geographic scope.


The successful candidate will become permitted as a Principal Investigator with SWCA, focusing on supervising fieldwork, primarily under the Paleontological Resources Protection Act, in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The position also supports National Environmental Policy Act review. Secondary goals will be to assist in maintaining current client needs, developing new business, and mentoring others.


This role is primarily technical. Supporting tasks include managing permits, contracts, and projects while participating in developing a forward-looking plan for the team. The successful candidate will coordinate with staff and leaders outside of the Rockies region to further the growth and leadership of the Paleontological Resources Program.


Technical leadership


  • Direct field and laboratory teams and prepare and review paleontological resources reports and other related documents, providing direction and quality assurance.
  • Develop efficient workflows for project execution to maximize efficiencies while also ensuring continuous QA/QC, in collaboration with Principal Investigators and the Director.
  • Develop recommendations for mitigation measures, monitoring, and permitting specific to paleontological resources, in collaboration with Principal Investigators and the Director.

Client/Project leadership


  • Manage the performance of individual projects and contracts and effectively coordinate with clients and agencies to produce technically excellent work on time and within budget.
  • Identify and mitigate project challenges to avoid overruns and ensure profitability.
  • Coordinate closely with paleontological staff and leads in other offices and regions.

Staff leadership


  • Collaborate with other leaders to prioritize and expand SWCA&s;s nationwide paleontological resources group.
  • Take a leading role in managing priorities for the paleontological resources group, ensuring adequate coverage of project needs, ensuring appropriate assignments of staff to specific tasks, and identifying staffing shortfalls to overcome.
  • Serve as hiring manager for staff-level positions. Take a leading role in identifying staffing needs, screening job candidates, conducting interviews, and making hiring recommendations.Supervise, mentor, and provide project-specific direction to paleontological resources project managers, technical staff, and field personnel.
  • Advise leadership on staff supervision, advancement, and course correction as needed.

Required Qualifications


  • Graduate degree in paleontology or geology and/or a peer-reviewed publication record.
  • Curation experience, including field techniques, preparation, and reporting.
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a Project Paleontologist, with project references.
  • Proficiency in fossil identification and significance evaluations.
  • Regional expertise in geology, stratigraphy, and biostratigraphy.

Preferred Qualifications


  • At least eight (8) years of relevant experience from either the private or public sector.
  • Experience working under the National Environmental Policy Act and Paleontological Resources Protection Act.

An employee in this Rockies-region position can expect a salary of:
Lead Paleontologist - $75,400.00/year to $98,280.00/year; Senior Paleontologist - $85,280.00/year to $111,280.00/year; Principal Paleontologist - $97,760.00/year to $127,920.00/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
